The Birmingham map pack, measured — not guessed

Most "local SEO in Birmingham" pages say the city is competitive and stop there. We measured it: 300 live Google Maps listings across 15 real searches — plumber to conveyancing solicitor — captured from central Birmingham twice, 24 hours apart, as part of our UK map-pack study.

Two things stood out. First, this was the most volatile map in our study: 6 of the 15 packs swapped members inside a single day. Second, unlike London, review depth here tracks rank — the top-3 carried a median 77 reviews against 41 for the chasing field.

In short

Birmingham's top-3 pack carries more reviews than the field (median 77 vs 41), so review depth does move with rank here — the opposite of what we saw in London. Nearly every winning profile is claimed (97.8%, the joint-highest we measured), which makes claiming table stakes rather than an edge. But nothing is settled: 6 of the 15 packs we tracked changed members within 24 hours. Salon packs are the wall (450 median reviews); emergency-plumber packs are the open door (5).

The averages hide the real story: the review bar swings by two orders of magnitude depending on the search. This is the median review count of the top-3 listings for each search we captured in Birmingham.

Three honest observations from the Birmingham capture

Here, review depth tracks the pack

Across our 15 searches, the median top-3 listing carried 77 reviews against 41 for ranks 4–20 — nearly double. That is the opposite of London, where the pack carried fewer reviews than the field. In Birmingham review depth genuinely moves with rank, so for most of these searches building a real review base is doing useful work, not just vanity.

Almost everyone has claimed — so claiming isn't the edge

97.8% of Birmingham's top-3 profiles were claimed — the joint-highest completeness we measured in any city. When nearly every winner has already done the basics, claiming your profile only gets you to the start line. The separation comes from categories, review depth and relevance, not from ticking the box everyone has ticked.

The most volatile map in our study

6 of the 15 Birmingham packs we tracked changed membership within 24 hours — more churn than any other city we captured. A single rank check here tells you where you stood for one moment. That's why we record a day-0 baseline and track movement monthly, rather than selling you a screenshot of a map that reshuffles overnight.

What this means if you trade in Birmingham

  • Check your search family in the table first — a salon's fight (450 reviews) and an emergency plumber's (5) are different sports in this city.
  • Because review depth tracks rank here, a steady review programme is worth more in Birmingham than it is in London.
  • Claiming is table stakes at 97.8% — plan to win on categories, relevance and reviews, not on the profile basics everyone already has.
  • In thin packs (emergency plumbers, locksmiths), a complete, well-categorised profile can be most of the battle.
  • Packs churn faster here than anywhere we measured — judge progress against a recorded baseline, not a one-off screenshot.

Your trade, in depth

The city sets the arena; your trade sets the rules. Each guide below covers the categories, review strategy and trust signals for that trade across the UK — pair it with the Birmingham numbers above.

Birmingham questions, straight answers

Is local SEO harder in Birmingham than elsewhere in the UK? +

It depends on your search family, not the city as a whole. In our capture Birmingham's salon pack demanded a median 450 reviews while its emergency-plumber and locksmith packs were held with under 10. What is distinctive about Birmingham is churn: 6 of the 15 packs we tracked changed members within a day, the most of any city we measured.

How many reviews do I need to reach the top 3 in Birmingham? +

There is no single number — check the table for your search family, where it ranged from 5 (emergency plumber) to 450 (hair salon). Unlike London, Birmingham's top 3 carried more median reviews (77) than ranks 4–20 (41), so here review depth genuinely tracks rank and a steady review programme pays off.

Does the Birmingham map pack change often? +

6 of the 15 Birmingham packs we tracked changed membership within a single 24-hour window — the most volatile of any city in our study. That is why we record a day-0 baseline for every keyword we track and measure monthly against it, instead of trusting one screenshot of a map that moves overnight.

Everyone tells me to claim my Google profile — is that enough in Birmingham? +

Claiming is necessary but no longer an edge here: 97.8% of Birmingham's top-3 profiles were already claimed, the joint-highest completeness we measured. It gets you to the start line. The businesses that win separate on the right categories, review depth and relevance to the search — the things most of your competitors have not finished.
