The Manchester map pack, measured — not guessed

Most "local SEO in Manchester" pages tell you the city is competitive and leave it there. We measured it: 300 live Google Maps listings across 15 real searches — plumber to conveyancing solicitor — captured from central Manchester twice, 24 hours apart, as part of our UK map-pack study.

One pattern separates Manchester from London: here, review depth is a genuine gatekeeper. The top-3 listings carried a median 135 reviews — three times the 44 of the chasing field — and not one of the 45 top-3 seats we captured was sitting unrated.

In short

Manchester rewards review depth in a way London does not. Across our 15 searches the top-3 carried a median 135 reviews against 44 for ranks 4–20 — a 3× gap — and every one of the 45 top-3 seats had a real rating attached. The heavy end is very heavy (indian-restaurant packs at 3,678 median reviews), but even the trade packs demand a proper base: locksmiths sat at 43, roofers at 24. The map is also lively — 6 of 15 packs changed members within a day.

Three honest observations from the Manchester capture

Reviews are a real gatekeeper here

Across our 15 searches the median top-3 listing carried 135 reviews against 44 for ranks 4–20 — a threefold gap in the pack's favour. This is the mirror image of London, where the top 3 actually carried fewer reviews than the field. In Manchester, the pack is not a place light-touch profiles hold on to; a genuine review base is doing real ranking work.

No empty seats — every winner is rated

Not one of Manchester's 45 top-3 seats was sitting unrated. In London and Sheffield we found several pack seats held by profiles with no rating at all; in Manchester there were none. The floor here is higher: even the softest trade packs (electrician at 12, EV-charger at 10) were held by rated businesses, so a bare, review-less profile has nowhere to hide.

The pack still moves overnight

6 of the 15 Manchester packs we tracked changed membership within 24 hours. A high review bar does not make the map static — it reshuffles inside a day just as much as more open cities do. That is why we measure against a recorded day-0 baseline and track movement monthly, rather than judging by a single screenshot.

What this means if you trade in Manchester

  • Check your search family in the table first — an indian-restaurant fight (3,678 reviews) and an electrician's (12) are different sports here.
  • Review depth genuinely tracks rank in Manchester, so a steady, honest review programme is worth investing in — this is not a city where volume is wasted.
  • With zero unrated seats, a bare profile will not sneak into the pack; get real ratings before expecting to compete.
  • In heavy packs (restaurants, dentists at 700+), review depth is a multi-year moat — start now or compete on a more specific search.
  • The pack still churns within a day even at a high bar — judge progress against a recorded baseline, not a one-off screenshot.

Your trade, in depth

The city sets the arena; your trade sets the rules. Each guide below covers the categories, review strategy and trust signals for that trade across the UK — pair it with the Manchester numbers above.

Manchester questions, straight answers

Is local SEO harder in Manchester than elsewhere in the UK? +

For most searches, yes — Manchester had the highest floor of any city we measured. Its top-3 packs carried a median 135 reviews against 44 for the chasing field, a 3× gap, and every one of its 45 top-3 seats was rated. Even the softest trade packs (electrician at 12) were held by real, reviewed businesses, so there were fewer open doors here than in London or Sheffield.

How many reviews do I need to reach the top 3 in Manchester? +

Check the table for your search family — it ranged from 10 (EV-charger installation) to 3,678 (indian restaurant). Unlike London, Manchester's top 3 carried three times the median reviews of ranks 4–20, so here review depth is genuinely a gatekeeper and building a real base is worth the effort.

Does the Manchester map pack change often? +

6 of the 15 Manchester packs we tracked changed membership within a single 24-hour window. A high review bar does not freeze the map — it reshuffles daily just like more open cities. We record a day-0 baseline for every keyword and measure monthly against it, rather than trusting one screenshot.

Can a brand-new profile break into a Manchester pack? +

It is harder here than almost anywhere we measured. None of Manchester's 45 top-3 seats were held by an unrated profile, so a bare, review-less listing will not slip in. The realistic path is to earn genuine ratings first, target a specific search family with a lower bar, and track your movement against a recorded baseline.
